YMCA of Delaware
For years, the YMCA of Delaware has struggled to figure out the right structure for their resource development department. When they first engaged Bruce Berglund, they hoped to come up with a staffing strategy. But they soon realized that changing the culture of the Y should come first.
Michael Graves, YMCA of Delaware CEO, explains it this way, “We’ve always been very focused on data and the technical nature of fundraising, but we weren’t as strong at cultivating relationships and telling our story.”
After conducting a development audit, the Bruce and his team began working one-on-one with the branch execs and CEO on the identification and cultivation of major gifts. “One of the major benefits of working with Donor by Design is the focused attention we get while they’re with us, and also the diligent follow-up,” continues Mike. “Donor by Design is educating, guiding, motivating and encouraging our staff each step of the way.”
The results? The YMCA of Delaware experienced a 26% growth in its annual campaign the first year. Their percentage of member donors increased from 5.5 to 7.7%, total donors increased by more than 1000 and their campaigners nearly doubled.
And the annual campaign is just the beginning. The YMCA of Delaware is also embarking on an ambitious capital campaign effort while building their endowment.
Mike concludes, “Bruce and his team bring a combination of patience, wisdom, perspective and prodding, giving us not just insight, but help in making that insight a reality.”
