Always Look Up!

By Peggy Vinson

A few weeks ago, my daughter and I traveled to London.  We’ve been looking forward to this trip together (her college graduation gift) for several years.

As expected, we went to all the great tourist attractions and had a terrific time.  While there we hung out in the hotel executive lounge to enjoy free wi-fi and lots of free food.  One morning, I was immersed in my iPad, playing Words With Friends with my friend back home in the States.

People were coming in and out and I really paid no attention, staying focused on my game, reading the news, etc.  Of course, I had my coffee close at hand!

As my daughter joined me, the people at the table next to me got up to leave.  My daughter sat down and immediately said, “Wow, that was so cool!  Matthew Morrison (Mr. Shue on “Glee”) was sitting right next to you!”

Oh My Gosh?!  I never saw him.  I think he is so talented and I’m a such a big fan… and I missed him completely.  UGH!

So here’s what I learned: “Always look up!”

How often do we all become so immersed in our day-to-day activities and issues that we forget to simply “look up” and notice our surroundings?  Are you stressed over the day’s to-do list, budgets, hiring staff, tonight’s meeting or anything else that’s dominating your attention more than it should be?

Do you need to push away from your desk and take a walk through the hallways?

What program warms your heart the most?  Take a walk through a program site and remember why you do what you do.  I don’t think it’s for the paperwork, right?

My favorite spot at my local Y was the aquatic center.  I loved to watch our swim and dive teams practice.  Ahh yes, that’s why I do this.

Do you have a favorite spot at your place of business?  How long has it been since you’ve visited it?  Do you need to take some time to “look up?”

And Matthew – I’m sorry I missed you… and missed an opportunity that in all likelihood will never happen again.

What/Whom have you missed lately?

I am sure Matthew wanted to talk with you but must have been in a hurry to get back on a plane to Lima, Ohio, the setting for Glee and a wonderful YMCA town.
