The 2010 statistics for charitable giving are out and they continue to show the same trend that has existed for years: Individuals give much more to charities and nonprofits than the corporations do.
$196 billion more!!!
Yet I sit at campaign planning meeting after planning meeting where the solicitation plans for corporate giving are the main conversation. Why are we so afraid to focus on the individual? Are we less sure of the individual’s ability to give? Do we lack the relationship to initiate a conversation? Is it just too personal? I’m not sure what the answer is, but I can’t imagine stronger evidence than this recent data.
I plan to laminate this chart from USA Today and show it to my clients and their volunteers.
Our time is best spent with the friends of our organizations and community leaders, sharing our mission and asking them to personally support us. Isn’t your mission and impact compelling enough to engage individuals directly?

GREAT blog post and eye-opening stats about playing “small ball” and considering individuals in funding strategies.
