ARE YOU COACHABLE?

I was watching The Voice not long ago, and Lionel Richie was coaching one of the contestants. He said, “If you’re coachable, you’re going a long way.”

That really resonated with me. Think about it for a moment. He’s not saying we have to be perfect, but we have to be willing to learn and take advice. It seems the times we plow ahead and don’t take time to listen to others is often when we stumble. I’ve done that more than a few times in my life!

Have you ever found yourself at a point in life when you didn’t feel the need to be coachable, but seem to be doing all the coaching? Have you ever reached the stage where you just didn’t feel like learning yet another new way to do things? Do you ever decline trainings or educational opportunities?

After thinking through this for a while, I’ve come to the conclusion that when we stop “being coachable,” we are no longer thriving. We become dormant and maybe even non-effective. We stop growing as a person.

We all need a reminder from time to time to take time to listen to others, ask advice, and bring others into decisions. When we listen to others, whether we agree or not, we most always learn something and expand our horizons.
